Uploading an image to social media without resizing it first is a small gamble. The platform will resize it for you, but it decides the crop, the scaling method, and the moment at which quality is lost, and none of those decisions are under your control. Preparing the file yourself at the right dimensions is faster than it sounds and removes the unpredictability: you choose exactly what is visible, you keep the image sharp, and you avoid the softness that comes from uploading a giant file that gets scaled down twice. This guide covers the dimensions that matter and a repeatable way to produce them.

Why the crop is decided by you or by the platform

Every social feed fits images into fixed frame shapes. A photo uploaded at the wrong ratio does not stay that way; the platform centers it and crops the overflow, which usually removes exactly the part you cared about. Resizing in advance means you see the final framing in your own editor, where mistakes are cheap to fix. It also means the export matches the display resolution, so the platform has nothing to gain by shrinking your image and every pixel you designed is the pixel that is shown.

Know the target before you start

Different placements have different shapes, and the shape, not the raw resolution, is the thing you cannot change later without losing content:

  • YouTube thumbnail: 1280 × 720 px, a 16:9 landscape card.
  • YouTube Shorts cover: 1080 × 1920 px, a 9:16 vertical frame.
  • Instagram feed post: 1080 × 1080 px square, or 1080 × 1350 px for 4:5 portrait.
  • Instagram Story and Reels: 1080 × 1920 px vertical.
  • TikTok video and cover: 1080 × 1920 px vertical.
  • Bilibili video cover: 1920 × 1080 px horizontal.

Write down the target before opening an editor. The few seconds of planning prevent the common loop of uploading, spotting a crop problem, and re-exporting.

Resize without distortion

The one rule that protects every resize is to keep the aspect ratio locked. If you type a width and a height independently and the numbers do not match the original ratio, the image stretches: people look wider, circles become ovals, and text appears squashed. Tools that lock the ratio compute the missing dimension for you, so changing the width to 1080 automatically sets the height to 1080 for a square, 1350 for a 4:5 portrait, or 1920 for a 9:16 vertical file. If your source does not match the target ratio at all, the honest options are to crop the source to the ratio first or to accept letterboxing; stretching is never the answer.

Resize down, never rely on upscaling

Resizing works well in one direction. Shrinking a large photo removes pixels in a way that keeps it sharp, and a 4000-pixel-wide source scaled to 1080 pixels looks clean. Enlarging a small image is the reverse: the editor invents pixels, and the result is soft or blocky no matter which scaling filter it uses. If a source is smaller than the target, the practical move is to use it at its native size where possible, re-shoot or re-export a larger version, or design the layout so the image does not need to fill the whole frame. Expecting a 640-pixel image to become a crisp 1080-pixel post is where quality goes to die.

Keep quality in the export

Resizing controls dimensions, but the format and quality settings control the file size that results. A resized photo saved as a lossless PNG is often far larger than the platform needs, while a JPG or WEBP at a sensible quality keeps uploads quick without visible damage. For a photographic post, exporting as JPG around quality 85 or as lossy WEBP gives a small, sharp file. For images with text, logos, or transparency, PNG or lossless WEBP preserves the edges. If the export still exceeds a platform's limits, an image compressor trims it while showing the before-and-after size, and an image converter changes the format when the destination prefers one over another.

A workflow you can repeat

Resizing becomes a two-minute routine once it is a checklist:

  1. Look up the target dimensions and ratio for the platform and placement.

  3. Crop the source to the target ratio if the original shape does not fit, or upload a source that already matches.
